HoloX is built on a legacy of groundbreaking holographic innovation.
Our roots trace back to the pioneering work of Dennis Gabor—awarded the 1971 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing holography. His discovery laid the foundation for the advanced 3D volumetric holography we deliver today.

1996

The foundations of digital volume holography were developed at MIT’s Media Lab and commercialized by Zebra Imaging. Initially, it was used by the U.S. military to convert satellite and aerial surveillance into 3D physical maps for tactical operations.

2016

HoloX acquired Zebra Imaging and its full IP portfolio, expanding the technology into new sectors while advancing resolution, production efficiency, and application range.

20 YEARS

Our holographic systems have supported military and government agencies for over two decades—tested in real-world environments and operational deployments.

ORIGINS

HoloX traces its origins to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where digital holography was pioneered in high-level defense research. Through Zebra Imaging, the U.S. military first used the technology to create physical 3D maps from satellite and aerial intelligence, offering unmatched spatial awareness in mission planning and field use.
Following HoloX’s acquisition of Zebra, the company invested heavily in refining the science and scaling production. What began as a tool for classified mission planning evolved into a breakthrough platform for secure authentication, high-fidelity visualization, and real-time volumetric display.
Today, HoloX remains grounded in its technical roots while continuously pushing the frontier of what light-based data representation can achieve.

Advancing Holography with DARPA & Zebra Imaging

Early holographic systems were developed for military intelligence, battlefield strategy, and high-security applications by Zebra Imaging in collaboration with MIT and DARPA.

Zebra Imaging, a leader in digital holography, was at the forefront of holographic mission planning for the US Military. Their holograms were used in 20,000+ active deployments for defense and security operations.

In 2017, HoloX acquired Zebra Imaging, bringing decades of military-grade expertise and advanced R&D under one roof.

Since then, HoloX has continuously improved upon this technology, enhancing image quality, reducing costs, increasing production speed, and expanding applications into high-security industries.
